Research paper
Introduction
The aim of this research was to make a practical work
which is presented in Kanepi Gymnasium. The practical research was carried out
in form 8 from January to May 2016.
The present summary consists of the following parts:
Introduction, History, Procedure, Result, Conclusion. It describes all the
research and practical work done.
My decision was to do some computer art using program
named GIMP. I took inspiration from the film called ‘’Alice in the
Wonderland’’. I chose three pictures: The Caterpillar, Cheshire Cat and The
Heart Soldier.
History
In the 1950s, many artists and designers were working
with mechanical devices and analogue computers in a way that can be seen as a
precursor to the work of the early digital pioneers who followed. One of the
earliest electronic works in the V&A's collection is 'Oscillon 40' dating
from 1952.
The artist, Ben
Laposky, used an oscilloscope to manipulate electronic waves that appeared on
the small fluorescent screen. An oscilloscope is a device for displaying the
wave shape of an electric signal, commonly used for electrical testing
purposes. The waves would have been constantly moving and undulating on the
display, and there would have been no way of recording these movements on paper
at this time.
In the early 1960s computers were still in their
infancy, and access to them was very limited. One of the main sources of output
in the 1960s was the plotter, a mechanical device that holds a pen or brush and
is linked to a computer that controls its movements. The computer would guide
the pen or brush across the drawing surface, or, alternatively, could move the
paper underneath the pen, according to instructions given by the computer program.
By the 1970s, a number of artists had begun to teach
themselves to program, rather than relying on collaborations with computer
programmers.
Procedure
First I talked with my instructor, she wanted to know
what are my plans and together we decided that I draw the images in GIMP and
then when they are ready we can print my three pictures, put a frame around
them and hang them somewhere in the school, so anyone can see my work. I
started looking for pictures and the first thing that I wanted to draw was The
Blue Caterpillar and when I was ready with that, I started drawing Cheshire Cat
and The Heart Soldier.
Result
I really love my pictures and I’m amazed how beautiful
they came out, they are really worth printing out and hang somewhere. What I
really like about these pictures is that they are so unconventional.
Conclusion
To sum up, I’m very pleased with my pictures and I
like the result, I hope to hang them somewhere soon so others can see them and
also I hope that they can see the hard work what I put on these pictures. I
also have to say that some days It was quite hard to focus on drawing, because
I was tired but I forced myself to finish my job and be happy about it.
